Open Door Policy

I like Sococo. Their UI is a testament to the fact that skeumorphism is here to stay. I do have one gripe though, and it has to do with their open and closed door visual metaphor:



For some reason my brain fails at the subconscious level when trying to determine whether my door is open or closed. If I apply just a few brain cells to the task I inevitably guess that brown means closed, and white means open; however I still find myself clicking on the door to hear the audio effect of the door opening or closing, just to be certain one way or another.

Why no apply a more obvious visual metaphor, such as this one:



This is better because an open doorway appears to connect my office to the outside environment, whereas a closed door visually and rather harshly disconnects me from the same.

Even better would be a skeuomorph of an open and shut door. Extra points for animating it:


This might sound a bit nit-picky, but every little bit we designers can do to lessen the user's cognitive load is a win in my opinion. Oh, and don't get me started on those tarantulas you see on every desk.
